Reaching Our Goal

Sometimes it is just a small act or a simple but creative thought or a kind gesture...that is the bridge-key to reaching our goal(s).

The Tragedy of Adulthood

A young student of mine once told me (re-phrased):
"Childhood is all about play...teens, all about fun...and adulthood and old age are all about being stressed and boring !" Perhaps the tragedy of adulthood/old age is losing that capability for genuine playfulness and fun.

Listening With an Attitude !

Many of us think we are listening but are just hearing. Worse still, we listen with an attitude...not listening sympathetically to what is said and not said but only listening to 'bite' people!

Trees

Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky,
We fell them down and turn them into paper,
That we may record our emptiness. (Kahlil Gibran)

In a world of plenty...

"World hunger is increasing, with an estimated 842 million people going to bed hungry every night. Most people suffering from hunger live in Africa and Latin America, but 34 million are in the former Soviet Union and 10 million live in the rich industrialised countries." (Source: 2003)

America the Dream, America the Reality

Ever wondered why a powerful and rich country claiming high moral ground resorts to blatant lies? And when its lies are exposed, it resorts to verbal acrobatics and trickery (see below). Is it not puzzling how a country such as this is projected as the image of the future for other nations?

US bureaucrats erase American 'hunger'

Washington
November 21, 2006

The US government has tweaked its terminology in referring to the nearly 11 million Americans who face a constant struggle with hunger to refer to them as people with "very low food security".

According to a report released this month by the US Department of Agriculture, roughly 35 million Americans had difficulty feeding themselves in 2005 and of those some 10.8 million went hungry.

But unlike last year's report on hunger in America, which labelled families who don't get enough to eat as having "food insecurity with hunger", this year's report referred to them as having "very low food security".

The change in terminology has angered groups that fight hunger who say it is aimed at hiding a stark reality.

Learning From the US: If You Do Not Have An Enemy, Invent One !

A quarter of Americans believe that Iran now poses the biggest threat to the United States, confirming that a sustained neocon propaganda campaign to demonize Iran and its leaders for their own strategic benefit is having a significant impact. According to a new poll by Gallup, Iran is top of the enemy list, with 25 percent, followed by Iraq at 22 percent, then China with 14 percent, and North Korea with 9 percent. (April 1, 2008)

Nothing comes to birth,

The Monster in Us All.

More than 86 million people were killed in war in the 20th century. That’s about a hundred an hour. On what basis can we be optimistic that such calamities won’t be repeated in this century? (Jonathan Glover)

Is Creativity Innocent?

Is creativity innocent? Or does it have a darker, violent and cruel side? And can we really get away by cleverly separating creativity, creation and application?

Isn't the invention of an atomic bomb a creative endeavour? But consider...

A first for the general public, the picture of the “mushroom cloud" is a very accurate approximation of the enormous quantity of energy spread below. The first atomic bomb, released on August 6 in Hiroshima (Japan) killed about 80,000 people, but it didn’t seem enough because the Japanese didn’t surrender right away. Therefore, on August 9 another bomb was released above Nagasaki. The effects of the second bomb were even more devastating - 150,000 people were killed or injured. But the powerful wind, the extremely high temperature and radiation caused enormous long term damage.

Anger for Change?

Just another view of anger....

There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest. (Elie Wiesel) The world needs anger. The world often continues to allow evil because it isn't angry enough. (Bede Jarrett)

Life's Journey

Life's journey
sometimes
takes us
from a path to a pathless world;
sometimes from order to chaos;
and
sometimes from norm to free play of desire.

It seems to be caught between disruption and creativity on one side and disruption, destruction and death on the other.

Elephant Cathedral/Silent Teachers

The word cathedral is derived from the Latin noun "cathedra" (seat or chair), and refers to the presence of the bishop's or archbishop's chair or throne. In the ancient world, the chair was the symbol of a teacher.

Tiny in all respects in comparison to its surrounding, the elephant has in the jungle that surrounds it a silent teacher. Very often we forget our tiny finitude, play up our pettiness and fail to recognise the many giant silent teachers in our lives.
